Causes of day and night
Rotation: when an object spins on its axis
The Earth rotates in 24 hours, causing days. The Earth rotates counterclockwise - causing the Sun to rise in the East and set in the West. The side facing the Sun is day and the side facing away from the Sun is night.
Revolution: when an object moves around another object. The Earth has an elliptical (oval) orbit around the Sun.
The Earth revolves around the Sun in 365 1/4 days. Every 4th year (Leap Year) we add a day in February (Feb. 29th) known as Leap Day to "catch up" the quarter of a day missed over the last 4 years.
